Cohere Acquires Aleph Alpha to Lock In European Sovereign AI

Cohere announced Friday it will acquire Aleph Alpha, a German AI company, in a move aimed squarely at European enterprise and public-sector buyers. Schwarz Group, a major Aleph Alpha backer, plans to commit $600 million to Cohere's Series E round as part of the deal. The acquisition remains subject to regulatory approval, per CNBC.

Cohere enters Europe with $1.6 billion already raised and a $7 billion valuation from 2025. The combined entity targets highly regulated sectors: public sector, finance, defense, energy, manufacturing, and telecom. CEO Aidan Gomez framed the deal around sovereign AI and shared Canadian-German values on privacy and security.

Watch whether European regulators clear this cleanly and how fast Cohere converts Aleph Alpha's installed relationships into contracted revenue. The pitch is trust and compliance, not raw capability. That is a buyer argument, not a lab argument, and it will be tested in procurement rooms across the continent.
