Dutch Government Sends International AI Strategy to Parliament
The Netherlands has formalized its foreign policy position on artificial intelligence. On July 3, the ministers of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation, and Digital Economy and Sovereignty jointly submitted an international AI strategy to Parliament. The stated goal: a safe, fair, and responsible AI transition that protects shared values while capturing the technology's benefits.
The strategy names both sides of the ledger. Opportunities include cybersecurity, defense innovation, and building European AI capacity. Risks include infrastructure dependency on non-European providers, misuse by malicious actors, and disinformation. The response comes in three lines: targeted diplomacy in Brussels and beyond, new coalitions with like-minded countries, and strengthening European AI capacity and infrastructure.
What the document does not contain is a number. There are no funding allocations, no quantified targets, no procurement commitments.
